IKA: The Chair of Information and Communication Systems (IKA) at Ruhr University Bochum combines in-depth fundamental research with practice-oriented development. With a vision of making information processing and communication safer, more efficient and more human-centred, there is a particular focus on data protection and security. The Chair’s main areas of research include acoustic signal processing and machine learning. Particularly noteworthy are the applications in the development of AI solutions for medical data and modern communication technologies. In close collaboration with industry partners, innovative prototypes and practice-oriented solutions are developed that drive technological progress.
LPS: The Chair of Production Systems (LPS) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Kuhlenkötter, is engaged in both fundamental and industry-oriented applied research. The LPS focuses on the key areas of production automation, industrial robotics, digitalisation in production, and production management. The modern Learning and Research Factory (LFF) plays a central role, where theoretical concepts from projects are put into practice and evaluated. Presenting these results in the factory promotes technology transfer to industry. Furthermore, the Centre for the Engineering of Smart Product-Service Systems (ZESS) offers a unique opportunity to intensify and advance research and development in the field of smart product-service systems on an interdisciplinary basis.
RUB/IGM: The RUB/IGM Joint Research Centre was established in 1979 on the basis of a cooperation agreement between Ruhr University Bochum and IG Metall. It can look back on almost 50 years of successful collaboration, which led to a series of reorganisations and ultimately to the development of a transfer research concept in 2015. The Joint Research Centre’s transfer research concept integrates practical knowledge from social practice into the research process and promotes close cooperation between academic and societal stakeholders. This transparent, interactive and adaptive process is based on three key features: inter- and transdisciplinarity, research in an applied context, and structure formation. The aim is to transfer scientific findings in a practical and sustainable manner.
