In this multiplier case study, the AI-based documentation system introduced at a care home was examined in terms of its human-centred approach. Through staff consultations and the implementation of the Friendly Tech Check, potential benefits and risks were assessed and further design requirements were identified.

As part of a staff dialogue, the procedures and design requirements of the AI-based care documentation system introduced at the care home were discussed. The discussion covered the wide-ranging benefits that have emerged since the system was introduced. At the same time, however, ongoing challenges were also addressed. Using the Friendly Tech Check, specific opportunities and risks associated with the AI-based care documentation tool were then identified from the users’ perspective.

The aim was to identify design approaches for a human-centred use of AI. Uncertainties in dealing with AI and technical uncertainties (e.g. system crashes, data loss) were cited as key challenges. The design ideas therefore focused, amongst other things, on addressing technical interface issues and on establishing information resources and forums for care staff to facilitate (collegial) support and the exchange of experiences.
