This talk will put two papers in dialogue with one another: first, he will demonstrate how dislocations in the AI supply chain—for example, between those creating datasets, frameworks, or end user applications—mean that accountability for harmful outcomes from AI is similarly dislocated and disavowed. Secondly, he will contrast this with a study of such a concrete context—examining software engineers’ use of an AI programming tool at NASA — and show how their trust in this tool is informed by social and organizational contextual factors. This talk seeks to demonstrate the value of understanding context in both research, when seeking to understand complex social phenomena can benefit from detailed study of the particular organization in question; and in ethical AI practice, where ethics is often a question of understanding contexts downstream use and misuse.

Dr. David Gray Widder studies how people creating “Artificial Intelligence” systems think about the downstream harms their systems make possible. He is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Digital Life Initiative at Cornell Tech and earned his PhD from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He has previously conducted research at Intel Labs, Microsoft Research, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was born in Tillamook, Oregon and raised in Berlin and Singapore.

We look forward to seeing you!

Via Zoom

Registration

[40

post-4790","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en
["GET
